By the year 2030, 1 in 6 people in the world will be over the age of 60. This is a historic moment for the world – one filled with challenges and also huge potential – as individuals, societies and governments confront one of the most fundamental population shifts in human history.

1 in 6 by 2030 is initiated by VII photographers Ed Kashi, Ilvy Njiokiktjien, and Sara Terry. It’s a global, collaborative project that unites photographers from around the world to give a human perspective to one of the most important “statistics” of our time. This seven-year-long project will feature a series of photo essays that bring these issues to life in every part of the world. So far, over 140 photographers, representing about 45 countries and 5 continents, have joined the project. Visit www.1in6by2030.com

First chapter: 72
‘72’ will be the first chapter of the seven-year-long project ‘1 in 6 by 2030’. Over the past five years, the global median life expectancy age has averaged 72 years old. To put a human face on this age, photographers from around the world found a 72-year-old in their community and photographed their daily lives. The interviews conducted with each subject reveal that sharing time with loved ones is the most cherished aspect of life for many people worldwide. The images and interviews demonstrate how life at 72 varies significantly in each country, yet the similarities are equally striking.
